Summary

Gradius, known overseas as Nemesis, introduced a sleek power‑meter system that turned a single capsule into a menu of upgrades. Each pickup slides a highlight along the meter, letting you lock in missiles, double‑shots, or the iconic shield with a press of a button. The tension of deciding which ability to claim while dodging swarms of alien craft defines the game’s rhythm.

When the title landed on the NES, hardware limits forced the designers to trim level layouts and cut the upgrade roster from four options to two, but they compensated with the now‑legendary cheat that could be entered from the pause screen – the Konami Code, which hands the ship almost every power‑up at once. It also marked Konami’s first North‑American NES release and appeared as VS. Gradius on the Nintendo VS. System and as a PlayChoice‑10 cartridge.

Critics still cite Gradius as a cornerstone of side‑scroll shooters, praising its strategic power‑up mechanic and the memorable “destroy the core” boss fights. Its influence endures, and the game resurfaced on the Nintendo Classics service in 2018, reminding a new generation of why the Vic Viper remains iconic.
