Summary

Nintendo’s Golf feels surprisingly deep for a first‑generation console. The swing is driven by a power‑and‑accuracy bar that lets you fine‑tune both speed and precision, a mechanic that set the template for almost every golf game that followed. You can even adjust your stance and the angle of impact, watching the ball arc differently as the wind shifts across the fairway.

The game supports both solo play and a two‑player mode where the second golfer dons a red shirt and black pants, contrasting the default white‑shirted player. Each match drops you onto the tee of one of 18 holes, and you can choose between stroke play, doubles stroke play, or match play, making it easy to turn a quick round into a friendly competition.

Miyamoto oversaw the character and game design while Satoru Iwata handled the programming, and the result sold over four million copies, ranking it among the NES’s top‑selling titles. Its simple yet strategic controls still feel on‑par with modern golf simulations.
