Summary

Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! turns the classic kaiju showdown into a quirky board‑game adventure on the NES. You pick either Godzilla or Mothra and move them across a hex‑grid that represents different planets, each hex turning into a short side‑scrolling stage. The board feels like a chess match, but the action bursts into platforming whenever you land next to an enemy monster.

The game sprinkles its levels with familiar Toho locales—rocky crags, tangled jungles, crumbling cities, and even a hyperspace zone where you clash with the mushroom‑like Matango or the alien battleship Gohten. Along the way you’ll run into a menagerie of classic foes such as the squid‑ish Gezora, the pollution‑eating Hedorah, and the cyber‑blade Gigan, all pulled straight from the movies.

When you finally reach Planet X, every previous monster returns for a final gauntlet before the three‑headed King Ghidorah looms as the ultimate test, each battle ticking down a forty‑second timer that never actually shows a countdown.

Critics weren’t kind, rating the title poorly across the board, and it later inspired a notorious creepypasta about a demonic version of the game. A sequel, Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters, swapped the kaiju for a military strategy angle, but the original remains a curious relic of retro monster mash‑ups.

Storyline

In the NES game Godzilla, the story is set in the vague year 2XXX when the mysterious Planet X suddenly appears as Pluto and Neptune swap places in the Solar System. The alien world launches a galaxy‑wide conquest, sending a legion of space monsters—some of which are actually Earth’s own creatures—to invade the planet. Earth’s only hope is the King of Monsters, Godzilla, who teams up with the guardian beast Mothra and the planet’s military forces. Together they must push back the extraterrestrial onslaught.

Players guide Godzilla through eight distinct battle stages, each filled with the alien monsters under Planet X’s control. The goal is to defeat the invading legion and stop the plan to dominate the entire universe. The game’s premise frames Godzilla’s rampage as a desperate defense of humanity’s future. Victory means the alien threat is repelled and Earth is saved.
