Summary
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! (NES) mixes board‑game strategy with side‑scrolling action. I pick Godzilla or Mothra on a hex‑grid that represents Earth, Mars, Jupiter and farther planets, then move them like chess pieces. Each hex triggers a short side‑scroll level; when an enemy monster sits next to you, the encounter flips into a quick fighting‑style showdown limited to about forty seconds. The board is peppered with environments—rocky, jungle, city and even hyperspace zones where you run into classic Toho foes like the mushroom kaiju Matango, the flying saucer Dogora, and the space battleship Goten. Across eight stages the roster grows, bringing in iconic monsters such as Gezora, Hedorah, Gigan and finally King Ghidorah on Planet X. The North American cartridge strips the original Toho credits, showing “Toho Eizo” on the title screen. Though critics gave the game poor scores, it gained a cult following, even inspiring the infamous “NES Godzilla” creepypasta and fan‑made demos.
Storyline
In Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, the story kicks off when the enigmatic Planet X materializes after Pluto and Neptune mysteriously swap places in the Solar System. The alien world’s inhabitants launch a campaign to conquer Earth, deploying a legion of space monsters—some of which are actually Earth‑origin creatures—as their primary strike force.
The King of Monsters, Godzilla, answers the call and teams up with the guardian monster Mothra and the forces of humanity. Together they battle the extraterrestrial invasion, confronting each monstrous foe across a series of stages. The alliance ultimately drives the alien threat back, protecting the planet from the looming danger of Planet X.
