Summary
Getsu Fuma Den blends side‑scrolling action with light RPG elements in a way that feels both nostalgic and surprisingly deep. You start each island from an overhead map, guiding Fūma to a gate that flips the view into a classic side‑scroll where you slash, dodge pits, and swap weapons on the fly by pausing and hitting A for defenses or B for attacks. Defeating foes earns experience that fills a sword gauge, boosting the power of each strike, while the money you collect lets you stock up on items at scattered village shrines and shops.
Each of the three neighboring islands hides a Pulse Blade, but you can’t access them without first obtaining the corresponding Devil Mask. Once you reach an island’s main dungeon the perspective shifts to a pseudo‑3D, behind‑the‑back crawl through a candle‑lit labyrinth, guided by a compass and peppered with hints from allies. Boss fights return to side‑scroll mode, and the game uses a traditional lives system with password continues, though dying halves your cash, keeping the challenge tight.
Storyline
In the distant future of 14672 A.D., the first year of the Demon Age, the demon lord Ryūkotsuki escaped from hell and set his sights on the surface world ruled by the three Getsu brothers. The brothers each wielded one of three spiritual Pulse Blades that had been handed down through their clan for generations. Despite their skill, Ryūkotsuki defeated them, leaving only the youngest brother, Fūma, alive. Determined to avenge his slain siblings, Fūma embarks on a quest.
The quest takes him to the cursed island known as Kyōki‑tō, or Mad Demon Island, where the stolen Pulse Blades are hidden. By retrieving the blades and summoning his brothers’ spirits, Fūma hopes to turn the tide and finally defeat Ryūkotsuki. This is the core storyline of the NES title Getsufuu Maden.
