Summary

Genghis Khan on NES offers a deep turn‑based strategy experience that splits into two distinct modes.  Mongol Conquest drops you into 1175 A.D. as Temujin, forcing you to balance a growing economy, train an army and expand territory.  World Conquest starts in 1206 A.D., lets up to four players pick from historic leaders such as Genghis, Byzantine Emperor Alexios III, England’s Richard or Japan’s Yoritomo, and then randomly assign stats to the ruler and successors.  Turns rotate among all Eurasian countries, each player getting three actions—training troops, buying goods, drafting soldiers, sending treaties or declaring war—while seasonal cycles dictate tax, harvest and food distribution.

When it appeared, Computer Gaming World hailed the title as "the toughest, most satisfying, and richest historical simulation" and gave it four stars in a pre‑20th‑century wargame survey.  Orson Scott Card lambasted it for tedium in Compute!, yet another reviewer praised the game as an excellent primer for real leadership because of its demanding resource management.

The game’s design rippled forward: Armağan Yavuz of TaleWorlds credits Koei’s Genghis Khan as an influence on the Mount & Blade series.

Storyline

In the NES title Genghis Khan, you step into the virtual life of the famed conqueror—or one of his rivals. The gameplay revolves around dynastic management: you arrange marriages, father children, and appoint family members to key governmental posts. Meanwhile, you must raise and train armies, drafting soldiers to expand your rule across the Old World. Victory comes from conquering territories that stretch from England all the way to Japan, blending political intrigue with battlefield strategy.
