Summary

Gekikame Ninja Den, known abroad as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, feels like a hidden metroidvania gem tucked inside the NES library. I love how the game starts you off as Leonardo, yet lets you swap to any of the brothers from the info screen, each with a distinct weapon feel that changes how you tackle enemies and platform puzzles.

The world is split between an overhead map—where you wander streets, rooftops, and sewers in four directions—and classic side‑scrolling stages that demand precise jumps, rope swings, and timed bomb defusals. Alternate weapons drop sparingly: single or triple shurikens, boomerangs that you can catch, and a crescent‑shaped Kiai scroll that turns the turtle into a brief cannonball of invincibility.

Health comes from pizza slices, and when a turtle is captured you simply pick another brother to continue, keeping the action flowing until all four are gone. The blend of exploration, item management, and quirky ninja‑turtle flair makes Gekikame Ninja Den a surprisingly deep single‑player experience.

Storyline

In the Japanese version titled Geki Kame Ninja Den, the plot follows Shredder’s kidnapping of April and his acquisition of the Life Transformer Gun, a device that can restore Splinter to his human form. To rescue April, the four turtles—Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael—hit the streets of New York and then the sewers, where they clash with the mutated pig Bebop and the rhino Rocksteady; they defeat Bebop but Rocksteady escapes with April. The chase leads them to an abandoned warehouse, a Hudson River dam where they defuse bombs, and finally a skyscraper rooftop where a robotic Mecaturtle holds Splinter captive. After freeing Splinter, Shredder flees in a helicopter, prompting a pursuit to JFK Airport, a battle with Big Mouser, and a final assault on Shredder’s secret Foot Clan base in the South Bronx, culminating in a showdown inside the underground Technodrome where the turtles defeat Shredder and use the Life Transformer Gun to return Splinter to his human form.
