Summary

Galaxian burst onto arcades in 1979 as Namco’s bright answer to Space Invaders, dazzling players with true‑color RGB graphics and a scrolling starfield that moved behind the action. It was built on a pioneering tile‑based hardware system that could animate multi‑color sprites without the heavy bitmap processing of its rivals. The visual punch was enough to make it the second‑highest‑grossing arcade title in both Japan and the United States for two consecutive years.

You pilot a lone “Galaxip” at the bottom of the screen, firing a single shot that must travel to the top before you can fire again. Waves of alien “Gorgs” glide in formation before diving in pairs, sometimes led by a larger flagship flanked by two red escorts; taking them all down nets big bonus points. As rounds progress the enemies speed up and unleash more projectiles, turning each flag‑marked level into a frantic dance of timing and reflexes. The game’s simple one‑button control hides a surprisingly deep challenge.

Though the arcade version never left the cabinet, a Japan‑only Famicom port preserved the experience for home players. More importantly, Galaxian’s sprite‑over‑scrolling architecture became the blueprint for Nintendo’s later hardware, influencing Radar Scope, Donkey Kong and ultimately the Famicom/NES itself. Its blend of color, speed and tight design still feels fresh, which is why the title remains a beloved reference point for retro shooters.

Storyline

In Galaxian for the NES, you pilot the Galaxip starfighter on a mission to shield Earth from relentless alien waves. The attract screen even declares, “WE ARE THE GALAXIANS. MISSION: DESTROY ALIENS,” setting a simple but urgent premise.

The invading Galaxian Fleet attacks from all sides, and the game features two‑way action: as you blast the enemies, they return fire. Success depends on quick reflexes and precise aiming, as you must destroy the fleet before it can wipe you out.
