Summary
A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia turns the simple act of feeding jelly beans into a clever puzzle‑platform experience. Each flavored bean triggers a distinct transformation—licorice makes the blob a ladder, apple a jack, punch a hole—so you can shape the world around you without ever pressing a jump button. The boy can only run left or right, while the blob follows his lead, reverting to its default form whenever you whistle.
Scattered diamonds and treasures boost your score and can be traded for vitamins at the in‑game drugstore, which power a quirky VitaBlaster gun for special tasks. Extra jelly beans and peppermints also grant additional lives, keeping the challenge fresh as you explore the interconnected screens.
Development was a sprint: David Crane led the team with Garry Kitchen’s help, completing the game in just six weeks while fitting every transformation into the NES’s limited resolution. Nintendo officially licensed the title in the summer of 1989, and Jaleco handled the Japanese release a year later.
Critics were split—Dragon gave it a perfect 5/5, while IGN rated it 4.5/10—but the game still snagged a 1989 CES "Best of Show" award and a 1990 Parents' Choice Award, cementing its quirky charm in the NES library.
Storyline
Fushigi na Blobby - Blobania no Kiki follows a teenage‑looking boy who befriends an alien blob named Blobert. Blobert has crash‑landed from the distant planet Blobolonia and begs the boy for help to free his world from an evil emperor who forces his subjects to survive on sweets alone. The duo must first explore a network of subways and underground caves on Earth, collecting the items needed for the final showdown. Along the way Blobert can shape‑shift after eating special jellybeans, giving the pair new abilities for the challenges ahead. After gathering treasure and gear, they travel to Blobolonia and confront the emperor to restore peace.
When Jaleco released the game in Japan in November 1990, it was retitled Fushigi na Blobby: Blobania no Kiki and the protagonist was redesigned as a younger boy, emphasizing the partnership between the Earth youngster and his blob companion.
