Summary

Demon Sword (the Japanese title Fudō Myōō Den, sometimes called The Legend of Acala) drops you into a compact seven‑stage adventure split across three worlds. Each stage ends with a boss, and every victory restores a fragment of the titular blade, literally lengthening and empowering the sword you wield. Along the way you can fire arrow darts, unleash power beams, and even run atop trees, but the platforming demands precise jumps to avoid holes and hidden traps.

The game feels like a polished cousin of Taito’s 1985 classic The Legend of Kage, sharing its tight physics and fluid mid‑air direction changes. Your character’s lithe red kimono sprite contrasts sharply with the muscular bronzed figure plastered on the Western box art, a visual mismatch that still manages to intrigue retro collectors.

Regional quirks are plentiful: the Japanese version adds six extra stages, more enemies, and a richer magic inventory, while the North American release swaps a simple life count for a vitality gauge, lets you upgrade shuriken power, and makes foes take less damage. The Japanese ending even tacks on extra scenes and text that were trimmed for the Western market.

Storyline

Fudou Myouou Den begins with an evil demon that has taken control of the world, forcing its inhabitants to live in constant fear. A humble villager named Victar possesses a legendary sword capable of destroying the demon, but the blade has been shattered into three fragments. To reforge the weapon, Victar must journey across three distinct worlds, retrieving each missing piece. Once the sword is restored, he can finally confront and defeat the demon that has plagued the realm.
