Summary
Fleet Commander stands out as a rare blend of board‑game feel and console action on the Famicom. Instead of relying on on‑screen graphics alone, the package shipped with a sizable paper map and a set of plastic ship and aircraft models, letting you physically plot the movements of Japanese heavy cruisers, battleships, submarines and carriers. The screen only shows a fragment of the ocean, so you have to keep the larger picture updated on the map yourself, turning each session into a miniature war‑room.
Another oddity is the complete absence of background music, which makes the clatter of the Turbo File—a proprietary ASCII save‑device—feel oddly immersive. The Turbo File not only records your progress but also ties the game to a handful of other titles that used the same hardware, underscoring its niche status as the first naval‑battle strategy game on the system.
Storyline
Fleet Commander on the NES pretends to pit two fictional nations against each other in a naval showdown. In practice, the game is widely recognized as a recreation of one of the crucial World War II sea battles fought between Japan and the United States near the war’s end.
