Summary
Fist of the North Star landed on the NES as a side‑scrolling beat ’em up, carrying the intense martial‑arts spirit of the anime. Taxan’s 1989 U.S. version was one of the first Western releases tied to the Hokuto no Ken series, appearing just as Viz debuted the manga in English.
The Japanese original was notably tougher: random side‑projectiles swarm the screen and the first two mini‑bosses must be struck on the head to fall. Kenshiro himself is drawn in black in Japan, but the localization switched him to a blue palette, and the “abeshi” and “hidebu” power‑ups became plain white and black stars.
Additional cuts were made for the American market—several end‑stage NPCs disappeared and continues behave differently. In Japan a continue drops you into Stage 4, whereas the U.S. version resumes exactly where you left off.
Storyline
In the NES adaptation of Fist of the North Star, also called Hokuto no Ken, the tale unfolds following the death of the warlord Raoh. The Central Imperial Capital, now ruled by the enigmatic Tentei, descends into chaos and corruption. Kenshiro, the Hokuto Shinken master, returns to the city after a long absence.
He finds the Hokuto Army resistance led by the grown‑up Bat and Rin, who have taken up the mantle of defending the oppressed. Determined to restore order, Kenshiro joins their fight against the Tentei’s imperial forces. The journey takes him deep into the capital’s streets, where he must confront the Four Generals of Gento. Their commander, Falco the Gold, awaits as the final obstacle.
Each battle tests Kenshiro’s lethal techniques and the resolve of the resistance, driving the story toward a climactic showdown.
