Summary

Fire 'n Ice challenges you to snuff out every flame on a grid‑based stage by conjuring or kicking ice blocks into the fire. You can slide ice like in Lode Runner, or drop it from above, and the ice will freeze to any adjacent wall, pipe, jar or another block.

You play as Dana, who can walk left and right, climb onto single‑high blocks, and push ice that slides until it hits an obstacle. His signature ice magic creates or destroys blocks directly beneath him and to his sides, letting you shape the puzzle in real time.

As you progress, pipes appear that Dana can travel through, and jars that burn when touched by fire. A burning jar blocks movement and destroys any ice placed above it, adding a layer of timing to each solution.

The game spans ten worlds of ten stages each, with a password system in the Western releases and a battery‑backed save in the Japanese version. Clearing all 100 stages and beating the final boss reveals a cheat code that unlocks a sound test and fifty extra bonus stages.

A built‑in stage editor lets you craft your own puzzles, though only the Japanese edition lets you save them, and the editor can expose quirky bugs that dramatically alter the mechanics.

Storyline

Fire 'n Ice opens with a grandmother gathered around a fireplace, recounting an old tale to her grandchildren. The story is set on Coolmint Island, a frozen land far to the north that is home to peaceful winter fairies. When the evil wizard Druidle unleashes flame monsters that threaten to melt the island, the Fairy Queen summons the apprentice wizard Dana, still a novice at the time. She grants him ice magic, and with his wisdom and courage Dana battles the fire creatures, restoring peace to the icy realm. The plot is presented as a prequel to the original Solomon's Key, framing the adventure as a legend passed down through generations.
