Summary
The NES version of Bonk’s Adventure arrives under the quirky name FC Genjin – Freakthoropus Computerus, a nod to the Family Computer’s full title. Hudson Soft handled the publishing while Red Company and A.I Company helped translate the original PC Engine platformer for Nintendo’s hardware.
Gameplay revolves around Bonk’s signature forehead smash, which is both his weapon and his shield. He starts with three hearts of health that turn blue as damage accumulates, and can replenish them by gathering fruits and vegetables. The real twist comes from meat power‑ups: small meat upgrades Bonk to a stun‑ground pound, while big meat pushes him into a temporary invincibility phase. These stages stack, and consuming additional meat while already powered up simply refreshes the timer.
Scattered throughout the levels are rare heart items. Red hearts restore a full heart (or, in the case of the large variant, all missing health), while the elusive blue hearts permanently expand Bonk’s maximum health by one heart. These collectibles add a strategic layer to the otherwise fast‑paced platforming.
Storyline
The NES title FC Genjin – Freakthoropus Computerus (often simply called Genjin) drops players into a whimsical, fictional prehistoric era.
The protagonist is Bonk, a strong, bald caveboy who battles anthropomorphic dinosaurs and other ancient enemies across the landscape.
His mission is to rescue Princess Za, a small pink plesiosaur‑type reptile, who has been kidnapped by the evil King Drool, a massive green tyrannosaur‑type dinosaur.
