Summary

Faria: A World of Mystery and Danger! (often just called Faria) drops you into an overhead action‑RPG that feels like a love letter to early Zelda titles. Most of the adventure is played as a sword‑wielding heroine, with a brief switch to a male character near the end, and you’ll spend your time swinging a blade, firing arrows, and tossing bombs at enemies.

The world is split into bustling towns, a sprawling overworld, and maze‑like dungeons. Towns let you chat with NPCs for clues and gear, while the overworld triggers random, separate‑screen battles that keep the pace lively. Dungeons cram combat and puzzles into a single view, demanding careful navigation and item upgrades. Instead of passwords, the game offers three save slots, and the usual RPG stats—levels, HP, and equipment—track your progress.

Developed early in Game Arts’ history, Faria was a stepping stone for creators who later shaped Grandia, Lunar, and even some Squaresoft classics. Critics gave it mixed marks: Nintendo Power noted a modest 3.7/5 for theme and fun, while GamePro praised its challenge with a perfect 5/5, even if it mis‑dated the Japanese release.

Storyline

The NES adventure *Faria* (also known as *Faria: A World of Mystery*) opens with a female soldier from a foreign land waking in an inn in the Kingdom of Faria. The king announces that the evil Wizard has kidnapped the princess, offering his hand in marriage to anyone who rescues her. The soldier storms the tower, defeats its monsters and brings the princess safely back, only for the king to lament that his savior is a woman and throw a celebratory feast instead.

During the party the food is poisoned by a mysterious man, and the soldier must journey to a distant town to fetch a cure for the afflicted townspeople. She returns with the medicine, but finds the king has been turned to stone. The princess reveals that the true culprit is the Wizard, who had impersonated the princess, poisoned the populace, and petrified the king to steal Faria’s royal scrolls.

An old man in Zellia gives the soldier a Crystal of Truth, allowing her to navigate the deceptive Phantom Tower and destroy the monster guarding the real princess. After exposing the fake princess, the Wizard reveals himself, fights the soldier, and attempts to merge his spirit with a dragon.

Although the Wizard’s body is destroyed, the soldier is transformed into a man—the prince of a frontier kingdom whose men were turned into women by the Wizard. The prince defeats the dragon, seals the Wizard’s spirit in a legendary sword, lifts the curses, and is offered the princess’s hand. He declines, but the princess chooses to accompany him back to his own land, ending the game with a reflective montage of his epic quest.
