Summary

The NES version of Fantasy Zone arrived as an unlicensed Tengen cartridge, turning the colorful arcade shooter into a quirky home‑console experience. I loved seeing the tiny spaceship Opa‑Opa sprout feet, zip between floating islands, and blast through hordes while the world scrolls left or right in a looping fashion.
The game hinges on a cash‑grab mechanic: every enemy, base, or boss drops money you can spend at a floating balloon shop for weapon upgrades, extra bombs, and speed‑boosting engines. You can only equip one of each power‑up, and a loss means you start the round naked again, which ramps the tension. Each of the eight zones culminates in a stage boss, and the final area pits you against a rapid boss‑rush before the ultimate showdown.

Storyline

In Fantasy Zone for the NES, you take the helm of the sentient star‑fighter Opa‑Opa. The ship roams a colorful cluster of worlds known as the Fantasy Zone, each teeming with alien threats. An aggressive enemy invasion sweeps across the planetary system, forcing Opa‑Opa to engage in relentless aerial combat. As the lone defender, you blast through waves of foes, clearing each planet of the hostile forces. The goal is to push back the invasion and restore peace to the entire Fantasy Zone.
