Summary
Fantasy Zone 2 – Opa‑Opa no Namida brings the arcade’s bright, "cute ’em up" vibe to the NES with a side‑scrolling shooter that feels like a playground in space. You pilot the sentient ship Opa‑Opa, zipping left or right through endlessly looping zones where each base you blast open reveals hidden warps that stitch the levels together. The game’s two‑button layout keeps things simple yet strategic: a rapid horizontal fire for the hordes and a bomb for those big, color‑shifting bosses that cap each zone, followed by a frantic boss‑rush. Shops peppered throughout let you buy speed upgrades that stick around until you lose a life, plus a rotating arsenal of weapons and a limited stock of bombs. The NES version even tacks on the subtitle "The Teardrop of Opa‑Opa" on the title screen, a nod to its Japanese roots while preserving the original’s whimsical charm.
Storyline
In Space Year 1432, ten years after Opa‑Opa’s hard‑won victory over the Menon invasion, the Fantasy Zone is once again under threat. The Nenon forces, led by the sinister Blackhearts, spread chaos and send seemingly innocent creatures to sabotage the warp gates that protect the realm.
Opa‑Opa returns to his homeworld, battling the Blackhearts’ henchmen and their cunning tricks while trying to keep the warp gates from total ruin. As the fight draws to a close, he confronts an identical copy of himself – a physical manifestation of his own dark impulses born from the war of his childhood.
When Opa‑Opa’s father appears, the sight brings him to tears, causing the dark twin to vanish. Reunited with his father, Opa‑Opa purges the darkness within and vows that such a disaster will never happen again. This is the story of Fantasy Zone 2 – Opa‑Opa no Namida, the zany sequel that pits the hero against both external evil and his own inner shadows.
