Summary

DuckTales on the NES still feels like a hidden gem from the golden age of 8‑bit gaming. Capcom’s team, fresh from the Mega Man series, gave Scrooge McDuck a cane that works like a pogo stick—swing it to smash foes, bounce to reach hidden platforms, and even fling objects for a little extra chaos. The game’s open‑ended map lets you hop between the African Mines, the Amazon, the Himalayas, Transylvania and even the Moon in any order, though you’ll need to backtrack to the mines and Transylvania for essential items. Collecting diamonds and ice‑cream restores health, while a secret life‑restore cheat (select‑button press while standing still) will refill your hearts for a steep $3 million price tag, a mechanic that even lets you engineer the infamous “bad” ending by spending all your loot. Capcom’s attention to detail shines in the bright, colorful presentation, the quirky replacement of crosses with “RIP” in Transylvania, and the switch from a blue to a red shirt so Scrooge pops against the dark backgrounds. The Japanese version, Wanpaku Dakku Yume Bōken, even listed Gizmoduck as “RoboDuck” in its prototype, hinting at the many hidden quirks that make this title a beloved piece of retro history.

Storyline

In the NES game Duck Tales, the adventure centers on the legendary Scrooge McDuck. He sets off on a globe‑spanning quest, even venturing into outer space, to locate five priceless treasures that will boost his already massive fortune. Along the way, Scrooge must constantly outwit his longtime rival, Flintheart Glomgold, who is determined to claim the riches for himself and become the world’s richest duck.
