Summary

Dropzone started as a hobby project on an Atari 800 that Archer Maclean bought the moment it hit the UK market in 1981. After years of tinkering, the game finally went gold under the Arena Graphics label and landed on the Atari 8‑bit, then the Commodore 64, where Maclean himself squeezed a 46 KB program together from roughly 15,000 lines of sparsely commented code, 350 subroutines and 3,000 labels. The title’s Defender‑style dog‑fight and rescue mechanics earned it rave reviews – Computer and Video Games called it one of the best Atari releases, and Zzap!64 awarded the C64 version a 95% gold medal. A rocky publishing deal with U.S. Gold saw royalties halted after 18 months, leading to a legal tussle that eventually settled out of court. Though the NES, Game Boy, Game Gear and Game Boy Color saw official ports, announced Master System and Genesis versions never materialised, and the sequel Super Dropzone later resurfaced on SNES, GBA and PlayStation, with only the handheld version reaching North America.

Storyline

In Dropzone for the NES, the action takes place on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, where a human scientific research base is being assaulted by alien forces. The player straps on a jet‑pack equipped with a laser, a cloaking device and three smart bombs. The mission is to dash through the hostile environment, rescue the stranded scientists and escort them safely back to the base.
