Summary

Dragon's Lair on the NES turns the famed laserdisc adventure into a 2‑D side‑scroller where Dirk can walk, crawl, jump and discover a handful of weapons. The controller layout is deliberately flipped – Select pauses, Start lights a candle to reveal hidden gear, B jumps and A attacks – a quirk that catches many players off‑guard.

The castle is split into seven areas linked by a central Elevator Shaft, with four main stages – the Drawbridge, Entrance Hall, Gold Mines and Hall of the Grim Reaper – plus a one‑room Lizard King vault where you can cash in collected gold. Two meters track light generation and damage, adding a thin layer of resource management to the otherwise frantic action.

What really defines the experience is its brutal difficulty: sluggish movement, near‑instant death traps and a health bar that feels almost decorative. PAL and Japanese releases run faster, sport extra enemies, new death animations and a “30 Life Code” that grants thirty extra lives after a high score when you enter the name “BATS”.

Critics were unforgiving, citing the reversed controls and unforgiving pace, yet a few praised the graphics and the sheer frustration factor. Scores ranged from AllGame’s 1.5/5 to GamePro’s 18/25, cementing the game’s reputation as a love‑to‑hate classic.

Storyline

Dragon's Lair on the NES follows the same story as the original LaserDisc arcade hit. You play as the heroic knight Dirk the Daring, who must battle through a series of timed scenes.
The goal is to defeat the fire‑breathing Singe the Dragon and save Princess Daphne from his clutches. The game’s plot is a faithful recreation of the classic adventure, keeping the rescue mission and the dragon showdown intact.
