Summary
Dragon Quest II – known in its original North American run as Dragon Warrior II – feels like the first true party‑RPG on the NES. Instead of starting with a full squad, you begin alone and gradually recruit two distinct heroes, each with their own eight‑slot inventory, which forces you to think about who carries what. The addition of a sailing ship lets you drop anchor anywhere, turning the world into a semi‑open map where travel doors and multiple‑use keys become essential tools for back‑tracking.
Combat also steps up: groups of monsters replace one‑on‑one duels, and certain weapons now unleash spells on impact, adding a layer of strategy that the original lacked. Hidden lottery tickets introduce a simple game of chance, while the battery‑backed save system (a departure from the password method) lets you talk to a king and actually manage your saved files – a quirky nod to the archaic English of the American script.
Behind the scenes, Yuji Horii penned the story, Akira Toriyama supplied the iconic art, and Koichi Sugiyama’s 8‑bit melodies still echo as some of the series’ most praised tunes. Despite its charm, the game earned a reputation for difficulty – relentless traps in the Cave of Rhone and a final boss capable of a "Heal‑All" spell kept even seasoned players on edge. Sales reflected its impact, moving over half a million copies at launch in Japan and eventually topping 2.4 million, cementing its status as a landmark sequel.
Storyline
Dragon Quest II - Akuryou no Kamigami, known in the West as Dragon Warrior II, follows the Prince of Midenhall, a direct descendant of the legendary hero Erdrick (called Loto in some translations). One hundred years after the events of the original Dragon Quest, the wizard Hargon razes Moonbrooke Castle and transforms its princess into a dog before fleeing. A wounded soldier escapes the ruins, reaches Midenhall and tells the king of the disaster, prompting the king to order his son to stop Hargon.
The Prince sets out alone but soon reunites with his two cousins – the Prince of Cannock, who began a parallel quest, and the rescued Princess of Moonbrooke, restored to her human form. Together they acquire a ship, sail across oceans, and even revisit Alefgard, the continent of the first game, where the grandson of the former Dragonlord reveals the secret of five hidden crests. Collecting the crests lets the party forge the Charm of Rubiss, the key to breaking Hargon’s powerful illusions.
Armed with the Charm, the heroes travel to Hargon’s ice‑capped stronghold on the plateau of Rhone. After defeating the sorcerer, he sacrifices himself to summon the demon Malroth, who emerges to threaten the world. The trio battles and slays Malroth, ending the darkness.
Returning to Midenhall, the Prince is crowned king, fulfilling the legacy of Erdrick and bringing peace back to the realm.
