Summary

Dragon Power is essentially the North American mask for the Japanese NES title Dragon Ball: Shen Long no Nazo, which originally hit Japanese shelves on November 27, 1986. When Bandai repackaged the game for the U.S. market on March 3, 1988, they stripped most of the Dragon Ball branding, turning the familiar heroes into generic sprites and renaming the adventure. European versions are a curious hybrid: some kept the original Dragon Ball graphics and even the title “Dragon Ball,” while still using the same underlying code. The result is a single cartridge that lives under three different identities depending on where you bought it, a rare example of how localization could completely rewrite a game’s cultural context.

Storyline

Dragon Ball – Shen Long no Nazo (commonly shortened to Shen Long no Nazo) follows the story of the first two volumes of the manga. Goku, the monkey‑tailed boy, joins his teenage friend Bulma—named Nora in the North American version—to collect all seven Dragon Balls, called Crystal Balls in that release, which are said to grant any wish.

Along the way they encounter several iconic characters: Master Roshi, listed as Hermit; the shapeshifting pig Oolong, called Pudgy; and the desert bandit Yamcha, renamed Lancer for the NA market.
