Summary
Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones (often just called Double Dragon III on the NES) expands the classic beat‑em‑up formula with a few clever twists. You can play solo or with a friend, choosing between an "A mode" that prevents friendly fire and a "B mode" that lets you accidentally knock each other down. Dashing is as simple as double‑tapping the direction pad, and the move list adds a running‑jump kick, a wall‑bounce triangle kick, and a mid‑air somersault that lets you toss enemies. When both players control the Lee brothers, they can unleash a twin cyclone spin kick that feels satisfyingly cinematic.
The game also drops the old lives counter in favor of a rotating party system. After defeating certain bosses you recruit Chin Seimei, a Chinese master, and later Yagyu Ranzou, a ninja leader, each with distinct speed, health, and special attacks. Press Select at any time (outside of attack animations) to swap characters, and each fighter carries a limited‑time backup weapon—nunchaku for Billy, an iron claw for Chin, shuriken for Ranzou—while you can also snatch knives, sai or even a beer bottle from enemies.
Localization reshaped the story: the English script adds a rescue mission for Marion and a resurrected Cleopatra, whereas the Japanese version sticks closer to the arcade plot and varies the ending based on who survives. Famitsu gave the Japanese release mixed scores, and the NES version briefly topped U.S. sales charts in February 1991, though Acclaim later discovered half a million unsold copies gathering dust in warehouses.
Storyline
Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones (often just called Double Dragon III) picks up a year after the Shadow Warriors were defeated. Marion Lee is snatched by a mysterious organization, and the only witness, Brett, is killed before he can name the leader. A fortune‑teller named Hiruko tells Billy and Jimmy that the kidnappers are hunting three Sacred Stones of Power scattered across the globe, and that rescuing Marion requires the brothers to collect the stones first.
The Lee brothers battle their way through the United States before jetting off to China, Japan and Italy, confronting a parade of tough fighters in each locale. Each country hides one of the Sacred Stones, and the brothers must defeat the local guardians to claim them.
The journey culminates in Egypt, where the final stone is found and the true mastermind behind Marion’s disappearance is revealed. In the climactic showdown the brothers face the enemy leader and fight to free Marion.
