Summary
Double Dragon II on the NES feels like a fresh rewrite rather than a straight arcade port. Technōs dropped the experience system and reshaped the Lee brothers' moveset, removing the elbow attack and turning jump kick but adding a backward‑directed kick and high‑kick grapples. Within the brief crouch window after a jump or knock‑down you can unleash a powerful rising uppercut or a knee jump attack, the toughest moves in this version.
The control scheme also gets a overhaul: instead of punch and kick buttons you have a left‑attack and a right‑attack that follow your facing direction, with the opposite button delivering a back kick. Pressing the forward attack triggers a rapid punch combo, while the backward press yields a Hurricane Kick‑style move.
Enemy design mirrors the arcade with new twists—a shovel‑wielding Williams, the whip‑carrying Linda, a head‑swap Abobo clone called Oharra, and the steel‑masked boss Burnov who can rematerialize. Throw‑away objects such as crates, logs and steel balls become makeshift weapons you can hurl. The final showdown pits you against a dark clone that mirrors your own attacks, forcing you to fight your own tactics.
Storyline
In Double Dragon II: The Revenge, the Lee brothers are thrust back into the streets after tragedy strikes. Marian, the girlfriend who survived their first fight, is fatally shot by Willy, the ruthless leader of the Black Warriors. Willy’s attack is a cold‑blooded retaliation for his defeat at the hands of Billy and Jimmy in the original game. Fueled by grief and rage, Billy and Jimmy set out to track down the Black Warriors and avenge Marian’s death. Their mission drives the entire arcade sequel, pitting the brothers against the gang’s increasingly brutal forces.
