Summary

The 1991 Famicom title *Doki! Doki! Yūenchi: Crazy Land Daisakusen*—literally “Thump‑Thump Amusement Park”—was re‑skinned for the NES as *The Trolls in Crazyland*. The shift was driven by the mid‑90s Troll doll craze, replacing the original Japanese characters with the plastic toys for the European market. A North‑American launch under the cheeky name *Crazyland! The Ride Of Your Life!* was teased in Nintendo Power’s Pak Watch (Oct 1991) before the publisher pulled the plug.

Gameplay puts you in the shoes of a helmet‑clad boy who hurls balls at on‑screen foes. Oddly, the more damage you sustain, the harder your kicks become, turning each hit into a risk‑reward dance. The visual style is bright and cartoony, matching the amusement‑park theme while the controls stay simple enough for younger players.

Critics were split: Famitsu gave it a modest 21/40, German *Video Games* scored 68%, and *Hippon Super* only 4/10. A *Family Computer Magazine* poll reflected the same ambivalence, with readers rating it 19.2 out of 30. The mixed reception likely contributed to its limited release, confined to Italy and Western Europe.

Storyline

In Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi for the NES, you play as a helmet‑clad boy who must rescue his girlfriend from a mysterious force lurking inside an amusement park. Armed only with a ball‑kicking ability, he hurls projectiles at the park’s hostile denizens. The twist is that the more damage he sustains, the stronger his attacks become, turning each hit into a chance to deal greater damage. The game’s simple premise—kick balls, defeat enemies, and save the girl—unfolds across the colorful, carnival‑themed stages as you battle toward the final showdown.
