Summary
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II blends a first‑person dungeon crawl with an overhead world map, letting me wander towns, browse shops, and haggle over items before diving back into the maze‑like corridors. The combat is classic turn‑based, with random encounters signaled by tiny sprites at the bottom of the screen, and I can choose to attack, cast spells, use items, or flee. Victories hand out experience, skill points for attributes like speed or magic, and a steady flow of money, while the moon’s eight‑phase cycle subtly shifts how demons react to my overtures.
What really sets the game apart is its demon‑negotiation system: I can talk my way into recruiting foes, then fuse two demons at a special altar to birth a hybrid that inherits both parents’ abilities. The fusion menu feels like a puzzle, and the choices I make in dialogue steer which creatures become available. Kazuma Kaneko’s monster art draws on Godzilla’s monstrous flair and world mythology, even though Nintendo once asked him to tone down a naked female demon’s nipples.
Developed by Atlus with Kouji Okada directing and Tsukasa Masuko composing, the title boasts an eight‑channel Namco 163 sound chip that makes its soundtrack stand out. Famitsu honored it with a Gold Hall of Fame slot, and retro critics still cite its graphics and music as the point where the series truly found its shape, despite occasional autopilot glitches and a game‑over screen featuring the ferryman Charon.
Storyline
Digital Devil Story – Megami Tensei II drops you into a bleak "20XX" world, thirty‑five years after a nuclear holocaust ripped the planet apart and tore open a permanent portal to the demon realm of Atziluth. Humanity huddles in underground shelters, and two survivors – the hero and his friend – accidentally summon the demon Pazuzu from a video game. Pazuzu declares them messiahs, grants the hero the power to summon and converse with demons and gives his companion magical abilities, then tasks them with destroying the demon lords that now rule Tokyo, starting with Bael, the one who sealed him inside Devil Busters.
The pair emerge to a world where the Church of Messiah hails them, but a witch also claiming messianic status warns that Pazuzu is manipulating everyone. Siding with the witch forces the friend to abandon the hero and become an enemy, while the hero and witch dismantle the Cult of Deva and eventually slay Pazuzu. Meanwhile the friend frees Lucifer, and a showdown with Bael ends with the hero killing his companion; Bael transforms into a tiny frog that can be spared or killed.
Collecting the Seven Pillars of Solomon lets the hero open a gateway at the missile‑strike epicenter, thrusting the party into Atziluth. There they can restore Bael into the god Baal, rescue the slain goddess Izanami, and confront Lucifer in his castle. Depending on whether Lucifer is allied, the heroes either battle Satan and then God, or defeat Satan alone and are elevated to deities in a new Millennial Kingdom. In every ending, the rift between worlds is sealed and humanity must rebuild on its own.
