Summary
The NES version of Defender of the Crown drops you into an Age of Chivalry where King Richard’s murder has plunged England into civil war. As the chosen Saxon knight, you must rally against the hated Normans, clash steel, charge steeds, and ultimately claim the Crown and the affection of waiting damsels.
Designed by Kellyn Beeck, it was Cinemaware’s debut title and originally dazzled Amiga owners in 1986 with graphics that set a new benchmark. When the game migrated to the NES, the visual and audio fidelity slipped, but the console version compensated with deeper strategic layers that weren’t as pronounced in the original.
The striking cover art, assembled by Peter Green Design and painted by Ezra Tucker, helped cement the game’s reputation as a production‑value milestone. It sold roughly three‑quarters of a million copies by 1989 and topped a million by 2001, earning praise for its animation while critics noted the gameplay could feel thin. Subsequent remakes and sequels have kept the legacy alive.
Storyline
Defender of the Crown drops you into England in the year 1149, a turbulent Middle Ages setting where the king’s death has sparked a scramble for power. You pick one of four Saxon heroes—Wilfred of Ivanhoe, Cedric of Rotherwood, Geoffrey Longsword, or Wolfric the Wild—and set out to push back the invading Norman hordes while vying for control of the realm.
The campaign is a mix of army‑building and direct combat: you raise forces, march on rival castles, and either loot them or lay siege until they fall. Periodic jousting tournaments let you claim new territories without a full siege, and even rival Saxon lords can become enemies you must defeat to claim their lands.
Side quests pepper the adventure, from rescuing damsels in distress to calling on the legendary outlaw Robin Hood for assistance when the odds look grim. By the end, the goal is simple—consolidate every province under your banner and become the undisputed ruler of England.
