Summary

Death Race on the NES is an unlicensed, American‑made remake of Exidy’s 1976 arcade hit. The cartridge was pushed out by American Game Cartridges in 1990 and even saw a limited Australian run through Home Entertainment Suppliers, where it was only sold to members of their HES Game Club. You pilot an armored sports car armed with rapid‑fire guns and surface‑to‑air missiles across eight U.S. cities—San Diego, Phoenix, Denver, Houston, New Orleans, Chicago, Raleigh, and New York—snagging flags and blasting enemies to rack up kill counts. Money earned lets you upgrade the engine, tires, chassis, and weaponry, while four difficulty tiers (Rookie to World Class) demand you replay every city twice at the hardest level to finish. Nintendo Player once called it the spiritual predecessor of Grand Theft Auto, noting how its open‑road mayhem foreshadowed the later series.
