Summary

Crystalis drops you into a sleek top‑down world where you can move in eight directions and juggle sword attacks with magical or item spells. The core loop revolves around hunting four elemental blades—wind, fire, water, and thunder—each capable of slashing and firing projectiles that clear obstacles and exploit enemy weaknesses. Level‑up progress boosts health, defense, and attack, while armor and shields add a strategic inventory layer.

The NES version stunned early‑90s gamers with graphics that still feel surprisingly polished, complemented by a memorable synth‑heavy soundtrack. Critics noted the art’s loose homage to Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä, and the title earned a solid 28/40 from Famitsu and a #42 slot on IGN’s Top 100 NES Games, even if its button‑masher combat sometimes felt repetitive.

Decades later the adventure lives on through the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, bringing the original experience to Switch, PS4, Windows, and Xbox One, so a new generation can still wield the elemental swords and chase that classic RPG thrill.

Storyline

Crystalis unfolds in the year 2097, a century after the cataclysmic "END DAY" of October 1, 1997, when a global thermonuclear war reduced civilization to a medieval‑like state teeming with mutated monsters. Survivors erected a floating Tower in the sky, hoping its weapon systems could prevent another disaster and grant its occupants control over the world.

The player awakens as an amnesiac scientist, later identified as SNK in the NES version, alongside his companion Mesia, both cryogenically frozen until the Tower’s activation. Guided by four sages—Zebu, Tornel, Asina, and Kensu—the hero learns magic, gathers the elemental Swords of Wind, Fire, Water, and Thunder, and forges the legendary blade Crystalis.

Draygon, a rogue scientist who merged forbidden science with magic, commands the Draygonia Empire and seeks to seize the Tower’s power. After confronting his false form, the hero battles Draygon’s true dragon‑like self, defeats the machine DYNA, and restores hope to a world yearning for peace.
