Summary
Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth, known in Japan as Vazolder: The Underground Battle Space, is a surprisingly eclectic NES title that stitches together side‑scrolling vehicle travel, overhead shooters, on‑foot platforming and even first‑person boss duels. You pilot the VZR craft through subterranean corridors, then hop out for classic side‑scroll combat where Moby can kick, jump and fire a gun. The first‑person segments are the most unusual: each boss carries a probability meter that you must fill to 100 % before the creature finally falls.
The game rewards you with new crew members as you progress, expanding the roster of characters that can assist in later stages. Survival hinges on two resources—fuel for the vehicle and energy for Moby’s life bar—so running out of either ends the run. Critics were lukewarm; Nintendo Power gave it 14.8/20 and GamePro scored it 16/25, while a Japanese magazine rated it 18.5/30.
Storyline
The 1999‑era mystery of sudden earthquakes forms the backdrop of Chitei Senkuu Vazolder (often just called Vazolder). The government commissions a fleet of powerful digging machines—Vazorudas, also known as VZRs and labeled “WURM” in the US manual—to investigate the tremors. Eighteen‑year‑old Moby leads one of these crews, and while probing the planet’s core she and her teammates uncover a hidden war between two underground human races. Contact is lost with four of the VZRs, leaving the player in charge of the fifth unit, which learns that the missing teams were ambushed by the Nonmalta, a monstrous subterranean empire. The Nonmalta are locked in conflict with the peaceful Dinamur, and Moby’s crew is drawn into the underground struggle.
