Summary
Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers lets you pick levels from a city map and then dive into classic side‑scrolling action. You can control Chip or Dale (or both in co‑op), walking, jumping, ducking and hurling acorns, crates, barrels or balls at the assorted enemies and bosses. Each chipmunk can only take three direct hits before losing a life, and the game offers no passwords to resume later. Along the way, Monterey Jack occasionally smashes barricades, Zipper grants a brief invincibility boost, and Gadget, trapped in Fat Cat’s clutches, dishes out helpful tips.
The title was Capcom’s second Disney‑licensed NES effort after DuckTales, produced by veteran Tokuro Fujiwara. Disney’s Darlene Lacey recalled it as one of the smoothest projects to clear the company’s family‑friendly standards, with only minor graphical tweaks needed for the Japanese and European releases. A leaked prototype even showed that the original extra‑life requirements were half the amount printed in the North American manual.
Commercially, the game moved about 1.2 million copies, making it Capcom’s fourth‑best NES seller. Critics praised its crisp cartoon graphics and solid two‑player mode, though some felt it was too easy for seasoned gamers. It earned a Parents’ Choice Award, landed at #79 on Nintendo Power’s top‑100 list, #71 on IGN’s greatest NES games, and still ranks among the best Disney titles according to GamesRadar.
Storyline
In Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, the team is hired to find a missing kitten for a girl named Mandy. Gadget moves ahead to scout the area while Monterey Jack and Zipper investigate sightings of strange mechanical dogs. Chip and Dale wander the streets, enter a laboratory and battle a crazed robot.
After the robot is defeated, Fat Cat reveals that the kitten was a ruse to lure Gadget into his clutches. Gadget quickly assembles a wireless phone and, using a carrier pigeon, sends a map to Chip and Dale so they can locate Fat Cat’s casino and free her.
With Gadget rescued, she hands the chipmunks a rocket that propels them toward Fat Cat’s hideout, where they confront the villain and put an end to his scheme.
