Summary
In the NES version of *Castlequest* you crawl through the sprawling halls of Groken Castle, trying to free the trapped Princess Margarita. Each of the 10×10 rooms scrolls horizontally, which means the field of view shifts as you push and pull bricks, metal barrels, honey‑jars, candle cakes, or the strange elevator‑controlling blocks into place to open blocked passages. Two fairies wander the corridors, lending their magic when the situation looks dire, and the resident creatures—from knights and bishops to wizards and ghostly flowers—must be met with a tightly timed sword or dagger swipe; a mistimed strike can prevent a combo and instantly cost one of the surprisingly generous 50 lives.
When the pressure mounts the Prince can dash, swap weapons or fetch his lost blade while keeping an eye on a 10‑square minimap that hints at the princess’s location. The game’s mix of action timing, push‑block puzzles, and colour‑matched keys provides a challenging depth that’s still fresh on a system whose original release offered no save feature.
Storyline
Castlequest on the NES drops you into the role of a brave prince on a mission to rescue Princess Margarita from the clutches of the evil sorcerer who haunts Groken Castle. The sprawling fortress is laid out like a giant maze, and each screen reveals a new room filled with traps, puzzles, and hostile creatures.
A handy map constantly updates the princess’s location, guiding you through twisting corridors and hidden passages. You’ll need to master the sword, dodge enemies, and solve environmental challenges to push deeper into the stronghold. Only by navigating every twist and defeating the castle’s guardians can you finally reunite with Margarita.
