Summary

Captain Tsubasa II: Super Striker feels like a polished sequel to the original Famicom hit, with slightly upscaled graphics and a sharper field radar that make the on‑screen action easier to read. The core of the game is its "cinematic soccer" system, where every tackle, dribble, shot or block drains a hidden "guts" meter, forcing you to balance flashy special moves against limited stamina—while the AI can pull off its own specials without restriction. Goalkeepers get a simple choice between punching or catching, and the ball’s height unlocks extra options like volleys, headers or even a rare bicycle kick in the right moment. In story mode you must win each match to advance; a loss sends you back to face the previous opponent, and every player’s experience climbs toward a cap of 500, rewarding repeated play. The soundtrack, a collaborative effort by Keiji Yamagishi, Mayuko Okamura and Mikio Saito, shifts with the team in possession, giving each side its own musical flavor and adding a surprisingly rich audio layer to this final Family Computer entry before the series jumped to the Super Famicom.

Storyline

Three years after Japan’s surprise victory over Germany and a World Cup win in France, Tsubasa Oozora heads to Brazil with his mentor Roberto Hongo to join São Paulo F.C. In Captain Tsubasa Vol. II - Super Striker, his goal is to capture the Rio Cup by beating six elite Brazilian clubs: Fluminense, Corinthians, Grêmio, Palmeiras, Santos and Flamengo.

At the same time, the Nankatsu High School squad, led by Taro Misaki and supported by Shun Nitta and Ryo Ishizaki, battles through the High School Soccer Championship. Their road includes clashes with Kunimi Gakuin, Akita, Tatsunami, Musashi, Furano and Toho, featuring manga staples such as Hiroshi Jito, the Tachibana twins, Jun Misugi, Hikaru Matsuyama, Kojiro Hyuga and others.

After the school tournament, Mr. Katagiri tells Tsubasa that a Japan Cup victory is required before he can earn a spot on the national team. He must defeat Roma, Uruguay, Hamburg and Japan itself to qualify.

Once on the national squad, Tsubasa leads Japan through the Asian Cup (Syria, China, Iran, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea), a friendly versus Vasco da Gama, the European World Cup leg (Poland, England, Russia, France), and finally a global showdown against Mexico, Italy, the Netherlands, Argentina, Germany and Brazil, the latter coached by his former mentor Roberto Hongo.
