Summary

Captain Skyhawk thrills with its top‑down isometric view that feels like piloting a 3‑D fighter through mountainous terrain. Rare’s NES shooter borrows the look of Zaxxon while letting you fly the fictional F‑14VTS across nine missions with branching routes that let you dodge or confront waves of enemies.

The plane’s arsenal starts with an endless cannon, but you can pick up Phoenix missiles, Maverick air‑to‑ground missiles and Hawk bombs by collecting credits in the rear‑facing combat screens. Between stages you dock at a space station, spend the credits to boost fire rate or reload the limited weapons, and then launch back into the isometric world.

Supply‑drop sections and occasional rescue of trapped scientists add a nice strategic twist, and the final encounter pits you against the alien mother‑ship after you’ve drained the enemy’s energy bases. For a 1990 NES title, the layered graphics, upgrade system and multiple route design still feel surprisingly deep.

Storyline

Captain Skyhawk puts you in the cockpit of a lone fighter pilot tasked with stopping an alien invasion of Earth. The extraterrestrials have erected four ground bases that siphon the planet’s energy and channel it to a massive mother space station. If the station gathers enough power, it will unleash a planet‑destroying laser. Your missions involve bombing each base, delivering supply drops to underground scientists, and rescuing captured researchers. As the scientists finish a secret Neutron Cannon, you must finally assault the space station itself and prevent the final blast.
