Summary

Cabal drops you into an over‑the‑shoulder battlefield where you see your commando from behind a fragile protective wall. You wield a gun with limitless ammo and a handful of grenades, trying to whittle down an enemy gauge while the structures in the background crumble under fire.
The arcade cabinet uses a trackball (later a joystick) to slide your character left and right and to steer the crosshair; a full‑speed roll is performed by spinning the trackball, granting a brief invincible dash. You can’t move while holding the fire button, so the aiming cursor drifts with you, forcing a constant balance between shooting and dodging.
Power‑ups spill from destroyed objects, sometimes handing you a blister‑fast machine gun or a wide‑area shotgun, while others add grenades or points. When the gauge empties the whole screen collapses and you move on, but a boss fight restarts from the beginning if the last player falls—unless two players cooperate and at least one stays alive.
Rare’s NES conversion is a story of pure reverse‑engineering: without source code they replayed the arcade version frame‑by‑frame, redrawing every sprite. Programmer Anthony Ball swapped left‑right sprites each frame to squeeze the massive sprite count onto the console, a trick that caused flicker at the eight‑sprite limit but preserved the game’s depth.
Although Cabal never became a blockbuster arcade hit, its 3‑D perspective and cover‑based shooting inspired a wave of clones like NAM‑1975 and Wild Guns, and it even spawned a western‑themed sequel, Blood Bros., cementing its place as a cult classic among retro shooters.
