Summary

Bubble Bobble Part 2 drops us back into the bubbly universe, this time with Cubby and Rubby – the dinosaur descendants of the original hero Bubby. They’re on a quest to defeat the Skull Brothers and their legion of fiends while rescuing a captured friend, using the series‑defining bubble‑shooting mechanics that can even burst into fire, floods or tiny tornadoes. The NES port keeps the classic platform feel: hold B to float upward, trap enemies in bubbles and burst them for points. Every ten stages the otherwise blank background swaps in whimsical scenery like trees and sky, giving each block of levels a distinct visual flavor.

New twists include three bonus stages that appear after boss battles or hidden doors, as well as fresh items – a freeze‑clock that pauses foes and wind bottles that launch gusty “wind bubbles.” Dragons can also launch Super Bubbles capable of enclosing multiple enemies at once. Because it was a low‑volume release, finding an original cartridge today is a bit of a collector’s treasure hunt.

Storyline

Bubble Bobble Part 2 (often just called Bubble Bobble II) opens with Bub and a girl named Judy relaxing in a park. A floating skull—one of the notorious Skull Brothers—suddenly snatches Judy, trapping her inside a bubble and lofting both her and Bub into the sky. Two shady characters called Drunk trail the skull and whisk Judy away to an unknown location. Determined, Bub transforms into a bubble‑breathing dragon and sets off on a quest to rescue his friend. In two‑player mode the same cutscene plays for Bob, confirming that Judy is a friend of both brothers according to the manual.
