Summary
Bubble Bobble landed on the NES in late 1988, bringing Taito’s beloved arcade co‑op to Nintendo households. The cartridge arrived just as the company was grappling with a lost source code, meaning the home version was painstakingly reverse‑engineered from the original board—a testament to the game’s enduring demand. Its bright, single‑screen stages kept the arcade’s frantic bubble‑blowing and enemy‑trapping intact, while the two‑player mode preserved the romance‑themed appeal that designer Fukio Mitsuji originally aimed for.
Beyond the core gameplay, the NES edition hid a wealth of secrets: hidden doors that appeared when players cleared certain levels without losing a life, letter bubbles spelling EXTEND for extra lives, and multiple endings that changed depending on whether one or two players finished the 100‑level trek. These quirks turned casual runs into a hunt for hidden codes and warp shortcuts, rewarding teamwork and perseverance.
The title’s legacy on Nintendo didn’t stop at the cartridge. It resurfaced on the Wii’s Virtual Console in 2007 and later on the NES Classic Edition in 2016, proving that the simple joy of popping bubbles and rescuing a love‑struck princess still resonates with new generations of gamers.
Storyline
Bub and Bob are two happy‑go‑lucky dragons living in a magical forest, and their girlfriends have been kidnapped by the villain Baron Von Blubba. To rescue them the brothers must battle through 100 levels of the Cave of Monsters. The goal is to clear each stage and ultimately confront the final boss.
In Bubble Bobble (NES) the duo—described as hungry “dino‑might” buddies—blow bubbles to trap enemies and then burst the bubbles to defeat them. The game offers a fast‑paced bubble banquet across more than 100 screens, with players battling battalions of foes by blowing and bursting countless bubbles.
When two players defeat Super Drunk on level 100, the story reveals that Bub, Bob, and their girlfriends are actually humans transformed by magic, and that the brothers’ parents were also kidnapped. Completing the game in cooperative mode shows a “happy end” where the brothers return to human form and reunite with their girlfriends. In the harder two‑player “super” mode a second happy ending appears, exposing Super Drunk as the brothers’ parents under an outside influence, and the whole family is restored and reunited.
