Summary

Bram Stoker's Dracula on the NES captures the gothic vibe of the 1992 film while giving the classic side‑scroller a surprisingly polished look. The sprite work is smoother than the Game Boy counterpart, the colors pop, and the resolution feels crisp for an 8‑bit system. I’m immediately drawn into the world where the legendary vampire’s curse is rendered in pixel art.

You step into the shoes of Jonathan Harker, the hapless solicitor who finds himself trapped in Transylvania’s nightmarish landscape. Whenever the odds look bleak, Abraham Van Helsing appears with upgraded weaponry that feels like a lifeline in the dark corridors. The gameplay stays true to the side‑scrolling formula, but the added firepower keeps each encounter fresh.

The stages are a tour through the novel’s most iconic settings: the mist‑shrouded Romanian countryside, a rat‑infested inn, the looming castle, cavernous vaults, eerie catacombs, fog‑laden London streets, Lucy’s crypt, a graveyard, and finally the crumbling Carfax Abbey. Each locale brings its own visual flair and set of hazards, making the journey feel like a true homage to both the book and the movie.

Storyline

Bram Stoker's Dracula on the NES puts you in the shoes of a young lawyer, Jonathan Harker, who must escape Count Dracula’s clutches, chase the vampire to London, and put an end to his reign of terror. Throughout the adventure, the legendary Abraham Van Helsing appears to supply Harker with advanced weapons that help him survive the night.

The game is divided into six distinct stages, each composed of several areas except for the final stage, which consists of a single, climactic arena. As Harker progresses, he confronts a variety of classic horror foes, each serving as a memorable boss encounter.

Bosses include Lucy Westenra transformed into a vampiress, Dracula’s three brides, his coach driver, a fire‑breathing dragon, and the deranged Renfield. Dracula himself appears in multiple guises—bat, youthful form, evil wolf, and finally a knight—providing a series of escalating challenges before the ultimate showdown.
