Summary

Blades of Steel delivers a frantic, arcade‑style hockey experience that feels more like a street brawl on ice than a textbook simulation. You choose from eight fictional squads that borrow the colors and locales of real Canadian and American cities, then face off in either a single exhibition or a playoff‑style tournament against a friend or the computer’s Junior, College or Pro AI.

The game’s signature is its built‑in fighting mechanic: after three consecutive body checks, the two players stop, exchange a pre‑fight taunt, and can launch a five‑hit punch‑and‑block duel. The loser drops to the penalty box, creating a 5‑on‑4 power play, and up to four penalties can stack for a dramatic 5‑on‑1 advantage. Near the net, a referee may break the scuffle and award a penalty shot.

During the second intermission the screen flips to a quirky Konami ad that doubles as a mini‑game, flashing a bear shooting a puck and nodding to titles like Contra, Jackal and Gradius. It’s a brief, tongue‑in‑cheek pause before the next period.

If regulation time ends in a tie, a shootout—five shots per side, then sudden death—decides the winner. The game skips off‑side rules, uses a soccer‑style penalty‑shot placement on the blue line, and enforces icing with a reset and face‑off.

Rare for its era, the NES version sprinkles voice clips such as “Blades of Steel!”, “Faceoff” and a guttural “Aaahhh!” into the action. Critics praised its fun factor and lasting appeal, noting that despite dated graphics it remains one of the most enjoyable sports titles of its generation.
