Summary
The Black Bass (often shown as The Black Bass USA on its North American box) puts you behind an overhead view of a tranquil lake, where every cast is measured by a little power meter at the bottom of the screen. I find the lure‑selection system surprisingly deep – different colors and types bite harder or softer depending on the weather and the time of day, and you can even steer the lure to tease a curious bass.
Each tournament spans a full day from sunrise to sunset on one of four distinct lakes, and you only move on if you haul in enough bass with a solid average weight. While pike, rainbow trout, and brown trout may nibble, they don’t count toward your ranking, keeping the focus squarely on the prized bass.
Progress is stored with a password that records your rank, the next tournament, total catches, and average weight. Nintendo Power gave the game a 3.5‑out‑of‑5 in its November 1989 issue, and it even resurfaced in 2016 as a built‑in title on the Retro‑Bit Generations console.
