Summary

Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge lets you feel the roar of a real Winston Cup field from the driver’s seat. Co‑designed by the 1988 champion himself and Distinctive Software, the game broke ground as the first title to carry an official NASCAR license and to feature a real driver on screen. You can pick from three factory‑tuned stock cars – a Pontiac Grand Prix, a Ford Thunderbird or a Chevrolet Lumina – then fine‑tune gear ratios, transmission settings, spoiler angle and tire stagger before each run, even swapping engine types for qualifying versus race mode. The tracks are faithfully scaled, covering six high‑banked ovals such as Daytona, Talladega and Atlanta, plus the winding road courses at Sears Point and Watkins Glen, all rendered with bitmap graphics that let you read the car’s make bumper‑to‑bumper.

Race distances range from a quick 10‑mile sprint to a full 500‑mile superspeedway marathon, and you can choose to run a single event or chase the season championship, with points awarded exactly as they were in the real Winston Cup. The DOS and Amiga versions even include an instant‑replay feature, while damage can be toggled on or off – though a big enough hit will always send you crashing out. In 1991 Konami ran a contest that let top scorers win a trip to the 1992 Daytona 500 and a brand‑new Ford Thunderbird, cementing the game’s place in early ’90s racing lore.
