Summary
Bible Adventures is a quirky three‑in‑one NES cartridge that lets you step into three loosely‑adapted Bible tales. Each segment—Noah’s Ark, Baby Moses, and David versus Goliath—plays like a side‑scrolling platformer reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 2, with simple jump‑and‑run mechanics that feel oddly at home on the 8‑bit console. The title screen even rolls J.S. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” giving the game a surprisingly classy soundtrack for a Christian title.
What makes the game stand out is how it slipped past Nintendo’s 10NES lockout chip: the cartridge emits a brief voltage spike when the console powers up, tricking the system into thinking it’s an authorized product. Because of this hack, the game never hit traditional video‑game stores; it was sold through church bookshops and mail‑order catalogs instead. Throughout the levels, direct Bible quotations appear on screen, turning the experience into a low‑key lesson as well as a platformer.
The three mini‑adventures each have their own quirky objectives—herding animals on the Ark, guiding a baby through the desert, and slinging stones at a giant—yet they share the same bright, blocky graphics and straightforward controls. While the gameplay is simple, the novelty of playing a faith‑based story on a console that normally hosted Mario and Zelda gives it a cult‑classic charm among retro collectors.
Storyline
Bible Adventures (Unl) on the NES splits its gameplay into three biblical vignettes. In the Noah’s Ark stage, you round up animals and food—sometimes knocking critters out with a barrel‑like object or catching fruit tossed by a monkey—and ferry them onto the Ark, while scattered Bible verses restore Noah’s health and hidden snakes lurk in a cave. The Baby Moses segment puts you in the shoes of Miriam, who must carry her infant brother across the level, dodging enemies that try to toss Moses into the Nile; oddly, the game will even comment that you “forgot Moses” if you actually throw him in. The final chapter, David and Goliath, begins with shepherd David herding sheep and fending off lions and bears using acorns, then equips him with a sling to dodge guards, scorpions and stones before confronting Goliath’s shield‑bearer and finally the giant himself, striking him once in the head to win.
