Summary

Battletoads (often just called Battletoads NES) is a beat‑'em‑up platformer that throws you into wildly different stages – from isometric side‑scrollers to vertical climbs, unicycle mazes and frantic racing segments. The game’s reputation for brutal difficulty earned it seven Nintendo Power awards in 1991 and cemented its place as one of the toughest titles ever made.

Combat is anything but ordinary: a simple punch can turn into a "Kiss‑My‑Fist" smash, a head‑butt becomes a horned "Battletoad Butt," and enemies can be grabbed, tossed, or crushed with moves like "Nuclear Knuckles" and the "Big Bad Boot." Each attack has a powerful Smash Hit version that enlarges the limb delivering the blow, adding a cartoonish flair to the violence.

Level design constantly shifts – you’ll swing on a turbo cable, dodge an ever‑speeding obstacle course, climb a tower, or plunge down a platform‑filled pit racing against a foe. Hidden "mega warp" points let you skip two levels, rewarding the rare player who can survive the gauntlet.

Rare built the game as a tongue‑in‑cheek response to the early‑90s TMNT craze, initially dubbing it "Amphibianz" and even flirting with a Disney theme before settling on a cartoony, weapon‑free aesthetic. The title resurfaced on Xbox One’s Rare Replay in 2015 (with a bug fix for level 11) and returned to the Nintendo Classics service in late 2025, proving that its over‑the‑top madness still resonates with retro fans today.

Storyline

In the NES classic Battletoads, Professor T. Bird and the three toad heroes—Rash, Zitz and Pimple—are escorting Princess Angelica back to her home planet aboard their ship, the Vulture, so she can meet her father, the Terran Emperor. While Pimple and Angelica take a joy‑ride in Pimple’s flying car, the Dark Queen’s massive ship, the Gargantua, ambushes them and drags the pair underground on the planet Ragnarok’s World. A distress signal brings the professor, Rash and Zitz to the surface, where they begin a frantic rescue across a series of wildly varied stages.

The adventure kicks off in Ragnarok Canyon, a desert filled with axe‑wielding Psyko‑Pigs and a Tall Walker boss that hurls boulders. From there the toads plunge into the downward‑scrolling Wookie Hole, dodge razor‑sharp ravens and electrified traps, then blast through the infamous Turbo Tunnel on a Speed Bike. Later levels swap genres: Ice Cavern’s platform puzzles, Karnath’s Lair’s snake‑filled corridors, and the vertical Intruder Excluder culminating in a showdown with the cyber‑netic Robo‑Manus.

After navigating underwater tubes, battling the rat‑led Rat Race, and climbing the rotating Revolution tower, the toads finally confront the Dark Queen herself. Defeated, she retreats in a whirlwind, and the rescued Princess Angelica and Pimple are whisked back aboard the Vulture for a swift escape from Ragnarok’s World.
