Summary
Battletoads & Double Dragon mashed two iconic ‘80s beat‑’em‑ups into a single NES adventure that still feels fresh. The crossover throws all three Battletoads together with the Double Dragon twins, letting you pick from five characters, each with its own signature smash‑hit moves—from Zitz’s "Nuclear Knuckles" to Billy’s spinning dragon force attacks. The game offers three play styles: a solo run, a "2 Players A" mode that lets friends hurt each other, and a friendlier "2 Players B" setup; either way you only have three continues and no password cheat sheet, so each death feels pricey. Rare reused the original Battletoads engine, so the controls stay simple (two buttons) while sneaking in brand‑new tricks like the "Back ’N Front Punt" kick on ledges and the ability to hang from cables or ropes while bashing enemies. For its time the NES version even sported 3‑D scrolling backgrounds and a logo on the box art that showcased Rare’s early experiments with 3‑D graphics, proof that the game pushed the cartridge’s limits despite Technos not being involved in development.
Storyline
After their victory over the Dark Queen on Ragnarok’s World, the toads and Professor T. Bird thought the threat was over. Months later a mysterious energy beam disables Earth’s armed forces and a massive ship called the Colossus erupts from the Moon, signalling the Queen’s return. She has forged an alliance with the Shadow Boss and his minions from the Double Dragon series, bringing Abobo, Roper and other Shadow Warriors into the mix. To even the odds, the Battletoads call on brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, the Double Dragon heroes, and the five set off toward the colossal vessel.
The first level unfolds on the ship’s tail, followed by corridors, the core base, and a space‑craft segment that shifts into a shooter as the Dark Queen hurls asteroids and UFOs. After destroying the Colossus, the villains escape in a missile hull, leading to a boarding fight. The final two stages pit the players against the Shadow Boss and then the Dark Queen herself, deciding the fate of Earth.
