Summary
Batman: Return of the Joker marks Sunsoft’s bold shift on the NES, moving away from the Burton‑inspired movie tie‑in and embracing the comic‑book incarnation of the Dark Knight while still sprinkling in the familiar Batmobile and Batwing cameos. The game plays as a run‑and‑gun platformer; Batman fires a wrist‑projector whose ammo changes with icons—crossbow arrows (“C”), Batarangs (“B”), Sonic Neutralizers (“N”) and Shield Stars (“S”). Sliding with the A‑button doubles as an attack and eight collected energy capsules trigger a brief invincibility boost. Seven stages take you through a Gotham cathedral, Joker’s warehouse, snowy mountain, refinery, underground conduit, ammo depot and the tropical Ha‑Hacienda island, each guarded by its own boss, with password saves, unlimited continues and three lives. Critics have long praised its crisp sprites and balanced difficulty, and the title lived on as Batman: Revenge of the Joker on the Sega Genesis in 1992, with an unreleased SNES build and a later‑found Game Boy version adding to its retro appeal.
Storyline
Batman: Return of the Joker kicks off with the Joker breaking out of an insane asylum and immediately plotting to plunge Gotham City into chaos. After the clown prince of crime steals a cache of metals—one highly toxic and destined for missile explosives—Batman is summoned to stop his mad scheme. The Dark Knight battles through a string of iconic locations, from the towering Gotham City cathedral and the Joker’s grim warehouse to a snowy mountain, a sprawling refinery, an underground conduit, an ammunition base, and finally the remote Island of Ha‑Hacienda. Along the way he confronts a roster of henchmen and memorable bosses such as the Ace Ranger, a hulking Minedroid, and the Master C.P.U. that controls the refinery’s operations. The climax features two intense showdowns with the Joker himself, forcing Batman to bring the escaped villain to justice and restore order to Gotham.
