Summary

Bandit Kings of Ancient China (often just called Bandit Kings) delivers a surprisingly deep, turn‑based strategy experience on the NES. Battles take place on hexagonal grids where I move troops armed with swords, bows, or even magic, and can set terrain ablaze to control the fight. The system forces you to juggle attributes like strength and wisdom while also handling taxes, equipment repairs, and the ever‑present threat of desertion. After defeating an enemy force you decide the fate of captives – recruit, imprison, exile, or execute – adding moral weight to each conquest. Reviewers praised the game’s intricacy; Nintendo Power noted the pace could feel slow, but admired its depth, involvement, and meticulous detail, and the 1996 remake on Saturn and PlayStation later amplified that richness with sharper graphics and a revamped soundtrack.

Storyline

Bandit Kings of Ancient China draws its story from the 14th‑century classic *Water Margin*. The action unfolds during Emperor Huizong’s reign in the Song Dynasty, where a ten‑member band of outlaws wages war against the tyrannical Minister of War, Gao Qiu. Players must raise and manage an army, gaining enough popularity to catch the emperor’s eye and earn an Imperial Edict that authorizes a march on the capital, Kai Feng, where Gao Qiu resides. The ultimate goal is to capture the minister before the Jurchen invasion arrives in January 1127. If the calendar reaches that month without success, the campaign ends in defeat.
