Summary
Banana Prince is a quirky NES platformer that blends traditional side‑scroll action with a plant‑growing mechanic, turning fruit collection into a central puzzle. The title’s oddball charm is amplified by occasional game‑show‑style bonus rounds where you answer questions, and the German release even swaps the trivia for region‑specific prompts and tweaks the sprite art.
Early reviews were split: some praised the precise controls, varied stage designs and clever animation, while others dismissed the visuals and sound as bland and criticized the sloppy English translation. Over time, retrospectives have warmed to the title, noting its Kirby‑like aesthetics, lack of sprite flicker, solid sound design and the creative blend of platforming with simple quiz elements.
For anyone hunting obscure NES gems, Banana Prince offers a nostalgic mix of solid gameplay and eccentric, collectible‑driven humor.
Storyline
The Banana Prince is an Island native on a quest to retrieve the stolen weapons of his island. Along the way he picks up companions and even appears on a game show that lets the player warp to another level.
He carries a bag of seeds that can grow flowers he can climb, a mechanic reminiscent of Jack and the Beanstalk. Collecting flower tokens lets him grow larger blossoms to reach hidden platforms and doors that would otherwise be inaccessible.
The seeds also serve as a platforming tool, while the Prince can wield the weapons he recovers during his adventure.
