Summary

B‑Wings (also released as Battle Wings) is a vertically scrolling shooter that lets you pilot the FX‑1 craft through a maze of 45 scrolling stages – 30 on the Family Computer port. The core loop revolves around grabbing "wings" – detachable power‑up modules that attach to the ship’s sides and change its fire pattern. You can swap them on the fly with the second button, even shedding a wing to score a quick 2,000‑point bonus.

The arcade version offers a handful of classic configurations – from the single‑shot Wingless to the radial Van and the ground‑targeting Ground wing – while the Famicom adds a handful of hidden weapons like the shielded Hammer, the ring‑shooting Sterling‑Silver, and the eight‑direction Oct‑Blaster. Some power‑ups can be stored with a Voltage item and swapped later, turning the game into a tactical inventory puzzle.

A unique twist is the ability to drop down to a ground plane when you’re wing‑less; airborne enemies can’t touch you there, but ground foes and obstacles still pose a threat. The background scrolls infinitely in both horizontal directions, giving the illusion of an endless battlefield.

Scoring is a deep rabbit hole: the game caps at 9,999,999 points, but clever wing‑un‑equipping can pump the total past ten million, unlocking a slow‑crawl to the 99,999,999 high‑score ceiling. Extra lives arrive every 40,000 points, meaning a skilled player can amass a near‑infinite fleet of ships before the final Gobunasu boss appears.
