Summary

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes lands on the NES as a whimsical 2D platformer that leans on the zany animated series rather than the cheesy movies. Imagineering’s pixel art brings the cartoony mutants to life, and the level design feels surprisingly tight for a licensed title. When the game hopped onto the Game Boy a year later, it didn’t simply copy the console version; Equilibrium built a fresh adventure while keeping the same bright cover art, and THQ handled the Western release while Altron did the Japanese run. The handheld version adds its own quirks and challenges, proving the franchise could survive beyond a single platform. It’s a fun, often overlooked slice of early‑90s nostalgia that still surprises me whenever I stumble across it in a collection.

Storyline

In the NES title Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, young Chad Finletter sets out on a solo quest to stop the mad scientist Dr. Putrid T. Gangreen. The villain plans to unleash a Doomsday Tomato that could devastate the town of San Zucchini. As the citizens cower in fear, Chad must battle endless waves of mutant tomatoes on his own. He traverses city streets, farms, and underground labs, confronting the grotesque fruit at every turn. The game’s story hinges on Chad’s determination to save his hometown despite everyone else’s refusal to help.
