Summary
Atlantis no Nazo feels like a love‑letter to early platformers, but it throws a few curveballs that set it apart. Unlike the one‑way scroll of Super Mario, you can move left and right on the same screen, and the physics feel a bit choppy, making every jump feel like a gamble. One hit and you’re gone, and the maze‑like layout of each stage forces you to think ahead rather than just run forward.
The game packs 101 zones—fields, caves, ruins, even clouds—each with its own visual quirks, from Moai statues to icy floors that turn your character into a sliding puck. Some zones are just “black holes” where you fall endlessly, and three hidden zones can only be accessed with a secret command that lets you pick any level you like.
Your only weapon is a stick of dynamite, which you fling at enemies but must also avoid when it explodes. Zones are linked by warp entrances that can catapult you forward or backward, and a ticking timer counts down from 999; run out or touch an enemy, fall, or get caught in your own blast and you lose a life.
Sunsoft marketed the title with the boast “The game that surpassed Super Mario!!”, and indeed it offers more stages than its famous rival. Contemporary reviewers, however, complained that the added complexity and finicky controls made it less fun than the Mario classic.
Although it never left Japan, Atlantis no Nazo resurfaced on the Japan‑only Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer in 2016 and later on the Nintendo Classics service in 2024. The protagonist Wynn and the final boss Zavira have since popped up in various Sunsoft spin‑offs, keeping the mystery of Atlantis alive for a new generation of retro fans.
Storyline
Atlantis no Nazo drops players into the mythical land of Atlantis, a massive island that suddenly erupted from the southern Atlantic Ocean after the Earth’s crust shifted. The island’s sudden appearance terrified explorers, and countless adventurers who ventured there never returned.
The player assumes the role of Wynn, an amateur adventurer who learns that his master vanished on the island over six months ago. Armed with a special dynamite invented by his master, Wynn sets out alone to uncover the mystery.
Wynn’s ultimate objective is to rescue his captive master in the final level, confronting an evil emperor who seeks to revive an ancient empire hidden within Atlantis.
